Is your Ford’s U1900 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) driving you mad? You’re not alone. If you’ve got no idea what’s triggered the U1900 code in your Ford Focus, or more importantly, how to resolve it, then you’re in the right place. The U1900 DTC is a frequent issue for Ford owners, and it often stems from a defective instrument cluster.
Shop Now – Resolve Ford DTC U1900
Instrument cluster issues have plagued Ford owners for decades now, especially since the release of multiple commonly failing units in the mid-2000s. These malfunctioning units have been known to trigger warning lights, messages or even render the dashboard completely unresponsive. One thing we see time and time again when these clusters fail, is the presence of the same DTC in the Ford Focus:
U1900 – CAN Communication Bus Error
It’s important to note that the U1900 fault code typically affects Ford Focus dashboards that were manufactured between 2004-2012 – like this one fitted to the pre-2008 Mk2, and this one fitted to the facelifted Focus Mk2.
Ford Focus U1900 DTC Explained
As you’ll have already worked out, this code nods its head towards an issue with the CAN bus system. We know you’ll have verified the integrity of the intertwined CAN wires already, so where do you go now?
Well, it’s often not considered that there’s a fault with the instrument cluster at play here. If your Ford Focus is experiencing starting issues in addition to the U1900 DTC, then this is absolutely typical of a Focus dashboard fault.
The instrument cluster is of course an integral part of the high-speed CAN network, regularly communicating with other safety-critical control modules. However, the internal defect within the cluster is disrupting its ability to output a reliable CAN signal.
When the cluster fails to transmit or respond to CAN messages properly due to its internal defect, other modules don’t receive expected data, the network detects this lack of communication and flags a U1900 code. This is why you might find the U1900 code stored in other modules, like the engine ECU, when the instrument cluster is actually defective.
The internal issue which is also disrupting the cluster’s CAN signal, is also preventing it from verifying key identity and authorising engine start-up. Subsequently, this leaves the Ford Focus without drive and with an ambiguous, and quite unhelpful, U1900 DTC stored for the CAN bus.
