What is a turbo actuator?
A turbo actuator electronically repositions components within the turbocharger assembly to adjust gas flow and control boost pressure. This in turn increases or decreases the rotational speed of the compressor wheel, adjusting the amount of oxygen reaching the combustion chamber, and influencing the level of boost available to the engine during acceleration.

Previously, it was common for this process to be controlled using a wastegate. This was essentially a valve that, when opened, would divert exhaust gases to reduce the turbine’s rotational speed and limit boost. Where this process is electronically controlled, wastegate position control units are commonly referred to as turbo actuators.

However, in more modern vehicles, turbocharger boost pressure is more commonly controlled by the position of adjustable vanes inside the turbine housing. When narrowed, these vanes allow exhaust pressure to build, helping the turbocharger to generate more boost. This is known as a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT) and it’s particularly effective at generating boost pressure at low engine speeds.

For owners of modern diesel vehicles, it’s more likely that you’ll require a testing and repair service for a VGT turbo actuator rather than a wastegate turbo actuator.

Signs of turbo actuator failure
As you can imagine, when a turbo actuator is faulty and in need of repair, the regulation of boost pressure is almost always affected. This often presents to the driver as a significant loss of power or enforced limp mode.

In some cases of turbo actuator failure, the engine warning light will illuminate and messages such as ‘restricted performance’ will appear on the dashboard. When investigating these symptoms further by scanning the vehicle with a compatible diagnostic tool, several DTCs strongly indicate a turbo actuator repair is required – these include P0046, P0047, and P2263.
