The DQ200 is a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that’s fitted to a variety of VAG models manufactured after 2008. Its mechatronic unit, which is responsible for managing this intricate transmission system, is highly susceptible to internal faults.

A key indicator your DSG7 mechatronic has malfunctioned is the presence of the P189C diagnostic trouble code. Other signs of failure include a loss of drive, a loss of gears, an illuminated transmission warning light and a loss of communication with the transmission system.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, fill out this test form and send your mechatronic unit to us for a long-lasting solution.

Which Volkswagen vehicles are affected by the P189C DSG7 fault?
The DQ200 (also referred to as the DSG7) is one of the most widely used DSGs across the VAG range. Unfortunately, this also means failure is widespread and incredibly common for a number of vehicles.

For example, the DSG7 is commonplace in the universally popular Mk6 and Mk7 VW Golf. The DQ200 is only fitted to 7-speed models manufactured between 2008-2017 with lower-torque engines (sized between 1.0L-1.6L). VW Golfs of this generation with 2.0L engines and above are typically fitted with the greater-torque-bearing DQ250 – which is also known to fail.

The DSG7 is fitted to a variety of VW models, like the Mk5 VW Polo and first-generation Touran, both of which are just as susceptible to the P189C fault. Find a complete list of affected vehicles below or browse our product catalogue

Thankfully, we remanufacture the DSG7 mechatronic unit for all Volkswagen models affected by the P189C fault - just complete our test form to get started.

Volkswagen P189C DSG7 fault explained
The reason the DSG7’s mechatronic unit is so susceptible to failure is due to an internal design flaw, which inevitably leads to a complete loss of unit functionality later down the line.

While this defect can present itself in a variety of ways, one fault code in particular indicates the malfunction has manifested itself:

  • P189C – Function Restriction due to Insufficient Pressure Build-Up

As indicated by the DTC’s accompanying message, P189C indicates your Volkswagen’s DSG is experiencing hydraulic pressure issues – and this all stems from the DSG7’s internal fault.

You might know already that the mechatronic unit is made up of various hydraulic and electrical control components, one of which is a TCU that’s essentially the brains of the entire DSG system.

As the TCU attempts to increase hydraulic pressure in the mechatronic unit, but sees that this is not happening sufficiently despite its command, it restricts gearbox functionality as a precaution. To the driver, this translates as limp mode or gearbox emergency mode, and of course, if the DSG is unable to build hydraulic pressure, the gears and clutches won’t be able to engage either.

As part of the damage mitigation process taken by the TCU, the hydraulic pump is also put into a protective state – this is evidenced by the presence of a P17BF DTC.

How to resolve the P189C VW DSG7 fault
Having diagnosed their symptoms as a defective DSG mechatronic unit, many affected owners look to replace their unit with brand-new. However, this is not the most effective solution and it can actually cost you significant time and money later down the line.

You’ve got to understand that the DSG7 fails as a result of an internal defect it leaves the factory with. This means replacement units may well carry the very same issue, leading to future failure.

To resolve your symptoms properly, you should always have the mechatronic remanufactured to overcome the internal fault for good.
