Does your Volkswagen have a traction light on and a 01324 fault code stored? This sounds like you’re suffering from a malfunctioning Haldex Gen 5 control module. Don’t worry though, we’re the experts at restoring full functionality to them in just 2-3 working days.
You’ll find these all-wheel drive controllers fitted to 2012-2022 Volkswagen 4motion vehicles. The 01324 fault is a particular issue for VW models like the second-gen Tiguan and Mk7 Golf R, although Audi owners are certainly not exempt either.
Remember, this control module strictly controls the fifth generation of the Haldex all-wheel drive system. Owners having issues with earlier generations of Haldex ECU can still send their module to us by filling out our test form or by accessing our product catalogue.
01324 fault code explained
As you’ll have already discovered thanks to your diagnostic tool, your VW’s stored 01324 code relates to a loss of communication with the all-wheel drive control module.
As you might know already, this ECU is responsible for managing the all-wheel drive system. In short, the Haldex control module is responsible for dictating torque distribution between the front and rear axles. It does this via a hydraulic oil-actuated clutch coupling attached to the rear differential. The overall aim is that differing the amount of torque between the two axles will help the vehicle to gain traction while accelerating rapidly or while driving in adverse conditions.
However, as important a role as this control module plays, it’s absolutely not immune to failure. In fact, the Haldex Gen 5 ECU is particularly prone to internal component malfunction. Inevitably this causes the entire system to fail and leaves your VW Tiguan with a 01324 code and a loss of all-wheel drive.
The reason your VW stores 01324 in particular when this unit fails, is because of the role the Haldex ECU plays on the CAN bus. Of course, the Haldex ECU doesn’t differentiate torque between the axles blindly, it’s a highly calculated process that requires the input of various other systems. For example, the Haldex ECU relies on the ABS unit to relay wheel speed sensor data, and the engine ECU to relay the position of the throttle. As a result, the Haldex ECU is highly active on the CAN bus.
When failure manifests, the control module is rendered completely defective. As a result, it fails to communicate via the CAN bus and stops engaging the rear clutch assembly. This loss of communication doesn’t go unnoticed and the CAN bus does its job by ensuring all other control modules are aware of an issue. Subsequently, this causes the traction control and engine warning lights to illuminate, in addition to AWD being disabled. Your Haldex ECU’s failure to communicate on the CAN bus is evidenced by your VW’s 01324 fault code, so when paired with the aforementioned symptoms, you can be sure that this is the cause of your issues.
VW 01324 – repair or replace the Haldex ECU?
Having condemned a defective Haldex Gen 5 control module as the source of their symptoms, many affected owners choose to simply replace the unit in an attempt to resolve their VW’s 01324 code. However, this isn’t something we’d recommend. Replacing the ECU with new is very expensive, frustratingly time consuming, and risks the fault reoccurring in the near future.
Instead, we suggest having your Haldex ECU comprehensively remanufactured by the industry specialists.
