In short, the Haldex control module is responsible for dictating torque distribution between the front and rear axles. It does this via a hydraulic oil-actuated clutch coupling attached to the rear differential. The overall aim is that differing the amount of torque between the two axles will help the vehicle to gain traction while accelerating rapidly or while driving in adverse conditions.
However, as important a role as this control module plays, it’s absolutely not immune to failure. In fact, the Haldex Gen 5 ECU is particularly prone to internal component malfunction. Inevitably this causes the entire system to fail and leaves your VW Tiguan with a 01324 code and a loss of all-wheel drive.

For example, the Haldex ECU relies on the ABS unit to relay wheel speed sensor data, and the engine ECU to relay the position of the throttle. As a result, the Haldex ECU is highly active on the CAN bus.
When failure manifests, the control module is rendered completely defective. As a result, it fails to communicate via the CAN bus and stops engaging the rear clutch assembly. This loss of communication doesn’t go unnoticed and the CAN bus does its job by ensuring all other control modules are aware of an issue. Subsequently, this causes the traction control and engine warning lights to illuminate, in addition to AWD being disabled.
