The control module for the fifth-generation Haldex all-wheel-drive (AWD) system has proven to be a common failure point across a range of VAG vehicles. When the Haldex ECU develops an internal fault, particularly in Audi models, you’ll find that fault code 01324 – control module for all-wheel-drive (J492): no signal/communication is typically stored.

Acting as a more responsive upgrade to its predecessor, the 5th generation Haldex control module distributes torque between the front and the rear axles when additional traction is needed.
In Audi models, the fifth generation Haldex system is fitted to 2012-2023 Quattro vehicles with transverse-mounted engines, including AWD variants of the Audi A3, Q3, and S3. However, the same rear differential mounted AWD system is also used across the wider VAG range, appearing in many Volkswagen 4Motion models and selected Skoda vehicles, such as the VW Tiguan and Skoda Yeti. This means that fault code 01324 is a common issue for many drivers whose vehicles are equipped with Haldex Gen 5 systems.
Audi Haldex Gen 5 - Fault Code 01324 Explained
Under normal operation, the Audi’s Gen 5 Haldex ECU receives live data from other control modules over the CAN bus, including inputs from the ABS, engine, and transmission systems. The control module then uses this data, such as wheel speed, throttle position, and brake pressure to control clutch engagement to regulate rear-axle torque.
However, if the module develops an internal malfunction and stops transmitting over the CAN bus, the AWD system registers this and enters a failsafe mode, disengaging the clutch pack and disabling torque transfer to the rear axle.
When communication with the Haldex control module is lost, fault code 01324 is stored in the Audi, confirming a complete loss of communication between the other control modules and the AWD system. The vehicle then displays the traction-control or ESP warning lights as a result of the AWD system being disabled. With the rear axle being disengaged, rapid acceleration or sudden changes in wheel speed are more likely to result in wheelspin, particularly on low-grip surfaces.
Audi Haldex Control Unit - Rebuild Or Replace To Resolve 01324?
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms outlined above, or have fault code 01324 stored in your Audi, you have most likely been advised to replace the Haldex ECU to resolve the problem. This is not the most efficient solution, as the fault stems from built-in internal design flaws, and replacement units are at high risk of experiencing a repeat malfunction down the line.
Instead, we recommend a rebuild of your Haldex control module. A full and comprehensive rebuild will not only clear the 01324 fault code and accompanying symptoms, but will prevent the problems from returning in your Audi. Each Haldex ECU we receive is thoroughly tested before and after the remanufacturing process, then returned ready to fit.
