In 2016 Volkswagen introduced a major step forward in driver experience with the launch of its ‘Digital Cockpit’. These fully-digitised displays replaced conventional analogue instrument clusters to provide owners with a range of advanced features. Unfortunately though, these impressive control modules are known to malfunction and cause the codes B200041 and B200049 to store in your VW:
*These codes might appear as 'Control Module Faulty' depending on the diagnostic equipment used.
B200041 – General Checksum Failure
B200049 – Internal Electronic Failure

The downfall of these innovative systems originates from internal component failure, which renders them inoperative. This causes a range of audible and visual issues, including a complete loss of the indicator tones. Most noticeably, your Volkswagen will display the concerning message ‘Error: Instrument cluster. Please visit workshop.’ on the Digital Cockpit before storing the aforementioned codes (B200041 and B200049).
It’s also common for key functions like front assist and adaptive cruise control to be disabled when malfunction strikes. However, if you’re experiencing both of these symptoms in a Mk2 Touareg, along with the code C110400, this points to a separate issue with the ACC Camera Module.
Although Volkswagen has consistently attempted to evolve their Digital Cockpit systems by releasing updated generations, it took multiple attempts to completely eradicate this B200041 and B200049 fault. Both first and second generation units are affected, but don’t worry, we’ve broken down the differences between these two systems below.
While very similar, the Digital Cockpits used in Volkswagens are different to those used in Audi vehicles – find out more about Audi’s Virtual Cockpits here.
As these sophisticated units are relatively modern, they’re only just beginning to fail. So, don’t worry if you can’t see your Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit below – if codes B200041 and B200049 are present, fill out our short test form anyway and we’ll have a look at it.
What causes the VW codes B200041 & B200049 to store?
These codes are a common occurrence for VW vehicles fitted with the Digital Cockpit and they both stem from an internal failure within the control module.
Your VW’s B200041 code relates to a ‘checksum mismatch’ reported by the Digital Cockpit. When the vehicle powers up, these units perform a check of their own system status to ensure it is able to operate correctly. When it detects values outside of predetermined parameters, this indicates a malfunction and so the cluster reports this in the form of B200041.
The B200049 code stored in your VW is also triggered by the internal malfunction affecting your Digital Cockpit. Appearing as an 'internal electronic failure' on VCDS diagnostic software, this code is reported to you when the system detects abnormal electrical flow within its circuits.
