The 5001 Mercedes-Benz DTC is a very common product of an internal ATE MK61 fault. These ABS control units are fitted to many popular Mercedes vehicles, such as the third-generation C-Class and the fifth-generation S-Class, amongst others.
When the MK61 fails, it typically causes warning lights for ABS, ESP and traction control to illuminate, and it’s common for power steering assistance to be reduced too. Of course, with the ABS warning light on, it can’t be guaranteed the system will activate effectively in an emergency. A strong indicator that your Mercedes-Benz’s problems stem from a defective MK61 is the presence of a 5001 fault code.
Fortunately, we’re the experts at resolving these issues. Send your unit to us for a comprehensive test and rebuild carried out in just 2-3 working days and backed by an unlimited-mileage lifetime warranty.
We remanufacture far more than just the MK61 unit, find our full range of Mercedes ABS module repairs or browse our product catalogue.
Mercedes-Benz MK61 ABS Fault
A huge amount of ABS-related issues in 2007-2015 Mercedes vehicles stem from a defective MK61 ABS unit. The reason these control units fail so frequently is usually due to internal component failure.
Many MK61s are comprised of components that often aren’t durable enough to withstand the challenges of everyday use, such as regular thermal cycles and repeated vibration. As a result, these control units fail much earlier in the vehicle’s lifetime than you’d expect them to.
Mercedes-Benz 5001 code explained
As already mentioned, this code is very often a sign of a defective MK61 unit in your Mercedes-Benz:
As indicated by your diagnostic tool, this DTC relates to the N30/4 unit, or the electronic stability program (ESP) control unit. This is an area of the ABS module that is responsible for controlling stability-related programmes, including ESP.
As you might know already, the ABS module constantly monitors feedback within its internal circuitry to ensure everything is functioning correctly. This process typically happens upon start-up of the vehicle. So it’s not necessarily that the ABS module has activated ESP which hasn’t worked, it’s that the ABS module has run a self-check on this area of circuitry and detected an abnormality.
When this happens, the ABS module logs a 5001 fault code, and as a result, your Mercedes-Benz’s ABS and ESP warning lights are illuminated to indicate there’s an issue. As traction control works alongside ESP, it’s common for this system’s warning light to be illuminated on the instrument cluster too.
Similarly, as the EPS (electric power steering) system relies on data from the ABS module to function, it too can be affected by the MK61’s internal fault. For example, the EPS module often uses vehicle speed data collected by the ABS module to determine how much steering assistance is appropriate for the driving conditions, e.g. additional assistance at low speeds and less assistance at high speeds. When the ABS unit reports an internal fault, the EPS module can’t trust its data and can therefore put its own system into a fail-safe mode – this translates to the driver as noticeably heavier steering.
So in summary, if your Mercedes-Benz has illuminated ABS, ESP and traction control warning lights, the steering feels heavy, and you’ve a stored 5001 code, then it’s likely your ABS unit is defective.
How to resolve the Mercedes-Benz 5001 fault code
Many owners affected by this widespread Mercedes-Benz ABS fault attempt to resolve their 5001 code by purchasing a brand-new unit from the manufacturer. What many don't realise, is that this isn't always the most effective solution.
As these units so often malfunction due to internal component failure, it doesn’t make sense to purchase a replacement unit that consists of like-for-like components. This option is usually very expensive, it leaves you vulnerable to the same issues returning and it means you’ll have to recode the brand-new unit to your vehicle.
Fortunately, we’ve developed a much more effective and cost-efficient solution for the Mercedes-Benz 5001 fault.
