When this unit fails it causes a plethora of failure symptoms, from an ABS warning light, to pump motor faults, all the way through to a complete loss of ABS assistance. These are frequent problems for a number of popular vehicles like the MK6 Golf (2008-12), Audi A3 (2008-12) and Mercedes C-Class (2007-14).
Don’t be tempted to completely replace the ABS unit when these symptoms materialise either, in many cases the ATE MK61 can be repaired to restore full functionality. Fill out our test form and we’ll tell you conclusively if your unit can be remanufactured.
What Is The MK61?
Automotive manufacturing giants ATE released the MK61 control unit in 2004 as an enhancement of their earlier release, the MK60. The MK61 unit brought with it increased processing power and improved integration with modern vehicle requirements and functionalities. Not only did it comply with expanding ESC mandates at the time, but the MK61 also made forward strides in software capability and thermal management.
Despite significant improvements in both design and functionality, the MK61 has proven susceptible to internal failures. When considering ATE MK61 repair options, it’s vital to first understand what is, and what isn’t a sign of ABS unit failure. Thankfully, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to assist you when tackling an ATE MK61 repair.
ATE MK61 Repair – Pump Motor Fault
When a defect manifests itself with the MK61 unit’s pump, you’ll have an ABS light on and braking assistance will be lost until the unit has been repaired. When investigating these symptoms further, you’ll uncover specific pump-motor-related fault codes. For example, this defect causes 5DF0 and/or 5DF1 to store in BMWs, C0110 in Vauxhall vehicles and 01276 for VAG models.
It’s important to understand that a MK61 fault doesn’t just trigger any pump-motor-related code, only a select few are caused by a malfunction of this ABS unit. The codes below are clear indicators that your ABS issues are coming from a defective MK61 pump and that you should have the ATE unit repaired:
Before sending your MK61 off for professional testing, it's always worth verifying that the ABS pump motor is receiving a 12V power supply and a solid ground connection in order to avoid unnecessary repair costs. If either is missing, rule out a wiring fault and verify the integrity of the high-amp pump motor fuse – this tends to be F25 for VAG vehicles.
If possible, you should also perform a pump motor output test with a compatible diagnostic tool, if this can’t be carried out it’s a strong indicator the ATE MK61 needs to be repaired.

ATE MK61 Repair – Control Module Fault
The MK61’s internal problems are unfortunately not isolated to just the upper section of the unit, the electronic control module mounted to its base also frequently fails.
As you can imagine these control modules were produced in great mass, and inevitably, cheaper, less reliable internal components were included. As a result, the electronic modules on ATE’s MK61 unit fail earlier than you’d expect, inevitably needing to be repaired.
Again, this issue will trigger the ABS warning light and will restrict assisted braking in an emergency. In VAG vehicles this will often be accompanied by a 16352 fault code or the infamous 01130 ABS operation implausible signal code. In other cases, a defective MK61 module will be completely unresponsive to diagnostic communication.
Of course before considering a repair of the ATE MK61’s control module, you should verify power and ground supply to the unit first. It’s also worth checking each ABS-related fuse, particularly the low-amp ABS module fuse – this is typically F2 in the engine bay fuse box for the MK6 Golf.

How To Resolve MK61 Failure
Now, once you’ve isolated your failure symptoms to a defective MK61 ABS unit, many experts will recommend that you completely replace it. This absolutely is not the most cost-effective or time-saving solution. Instead we suggest having your control unit comprehensively remanufactured.
Remember, replacement units are made up of the very same internal profile as your original. This means the expensive replacement you’ve ordered and endured an extensive lead time for, comes loaded with the same design flaw and weak internals that caused the problem in the first place.
