If the gear selector in your Land Rover Discovery Sport is stuck, it’s likely to have suffered a surprisingly common malfunction that’ll need to be repaired. The rotary selector dials in 2012-2020 vehicles are known troublemakers that’ll completely prevent gear selection when they fail. Thankfully, you’re in the right place, we’re the experts at remanufacturing them.
Discovery 4/Discovery Sport Gear Selector Repair
The Land Rover Discovery’s stylish gear selector dial is designed to rise and fall in line with vehicle ignition, and rotate smoothly to cycle through gears. However, due to an internal malfunction, this functionality is often lost suddenly, leaving Land Rover Discovery Sport owners stranded until their stuck gear selector has been repaired.
Unfortunately though, it’s not just one type of gear selector that causes these issues for Discovery owners. Since 2012, Land Rover have fitted two commonly failing gear selectors to both the Discovery and Discovery Sport – making it confusing when navigating the repair market. Unlike most other remanufacturing services, we rebuild both types of control module - we’ve broken down the differences between the two below:
Which gear selector does my Land Rover Discovery/Discovery Sport have?
Both of these models frequently experiences an issue where the gear selector module fails and causes the dial to remain stuck. However, it’s important to understand exactly which gear selector module is in your generation of Land Rover Discovery/Sport before sourcing a repair or replacement.
The most commonly failing of the two modules is typically referred to as an ‘N3RUA’ – this name relates to markings on the unit’s plastic body. You’ll find an N3RUA fitted to the Discovery 4 (2012-2016) and the Discovery Sport from launch (2014-2016).
As you can tell from the aforementioned year ranges, Land Rover decided to do something about the Discovery’s frequently stuck gear selector in 2016. Unfortunately, the replacement unit they fitted doesn’t just look similar, but it also fails in an identical way too.
The N3RUA’s successor is often referred to as a ‘DH9WD’, again due to the markings found on the unit (not the part number sticker). You’ll find the DH9WD in the fifth-generation Discovery (2016-2020) and Discovery Sport from 2016 (2016-2019).
The way you can quickly distinguish between the two units is by removing them and inspecting the underside of the control module. The N3RUA consists of a silver metallic base, whereas the DH9WD has a full black plastic body:

Stuck Land Rover Discovery Sport gear selector: repair or replace?
The reason you’ve lost functionality of the selector dial is due to an internal defect within its control module. This malfunction stems from poor-quality internal components which fail much earlier than you’d expect in a premium vehicle like a Land Rover Discovery Sport – inevitably requiring a gear selector repair or replacement.
However, you’ve got to remember that a brand-new selector module consists of the very same low-quality components that caused a complete failure of your original unit. This means a replacement module, will not only cost you extortionately and require additional coding to your vehicle, but it also leaves you vulnerable to re-malfunction.
Thankfully, we’ve got a much better option.
