Although it’s satisfying when the dial smoothly rises on ignition ready for gear selection, this experience comes crashing down to earth when the lifeless selector remains stuck down. Of course, the Range Rover Evoque will remain stuck in gear until the selector has been repaired or professionally rebuilt.
While a stuck gear selector is an issue affecting a number of Range Rover models, this affects first-generation Evoques most frequently. When searching for a Range Rover Evoque gear selector repair, it’s important to understand that first-generation vehicles are fitted with two separate modules - we’ve broken this down below:
Which gear selector does my Range Rover Evoque have?
As mentioned, it’s strictly the first-generation Range Rover Evoque (2011-2018) that experiences a gear selector that’s stuck down and in need of repair. However, Land Rover changed the gear selector control unit in these models during a 2016 facelift. The bad news is that the replacement units fail in virtually the same way.
The commonly-failing gear selector fitted to the early first-gen Range Rover Evoque is often referred to as an N3RUA – relating to markings on the black plastic body of these units (not the individual part number on the sticker). It's not just Evoque owners that’re frequently in need of a gear selector repair either, you’ll also find the problematic N3RUA in the fourth-generation Range Rover and first-generation Range Rover Sport.
The gear selectors fitted to the post-facelift Range Rover Evoque are marked with ‘DH9WD’ on their black plastic body, and experience almost identical problems to the N3RUA. As we mentioned, you’ll find the DH9WD gear selector in the Evoque from 2016-2018 as well as the first-generation Range Rover Velar.
The two control modules look almost identical. The only visible difference between them becomes apparent after removal. The N3RUA has a mostly silver base, whereas the DH9WD has a mostly plastic base.

Range Rover Evoque’s gear selector problems explained
The reason your Range Rover’s gear selector dial remains stuck down is due to an internal malfunction within the control unit, which will need to be repaired or remanufactured in order to resolve.
This internal breakdown prevents both control units from moving freely and therefore selecting gears. This restriction relates to both vertical and horizontal movement, meaning failure can occur while driving or when starting the engine.
Most commonly, the failed Range Rover gear selector remains submerged in the Evoque’s centre console and stuck in park. In other cases, the selector sticks in gear while in operation, often refusing to go into park or reverse straight from drive - this of course leaves the Range Rover Evoque stuck in drive.
