5DF0 & 5DF1 BMW Fault

Have you got a 2004-2011 BMW with an ABS light on and a 5DF0 or 5DF1 code stored? This sounds like you’re experiencing a common issue with the ATE MK61 ABS unit. Don’t worry, we remanufacture these control units in just 2-3 working days with a lifetime warranty included.

Shop Now – BMW 5DF0 & 5DF1 Solution

You’ll typically find these ABS units fitted to the E90 3 Series (2004-2011), although they’re also a common issue for the E87 1 Series (2007-2011) and E85 Z4 (2005-2008).

When the ATE MK61 ABS unit fails, it’ll almost always illuminate the ABS warning light in your BMW – as well as cause codes 5DF0 and 5DF1 to store. Other warning lights are also triggered by this fault, such as the DSC, traction control and brake warning lights.

The reason these units fail so frequently is due to an internal design flaw, inevitably meaning failure is widespread and a surprisingly common occurrence. Thankfully though, we’re the experts at remanufacturing these ABS units, just complete our test form to get started.

BMW 5DF0 & 5DF1 Fault Explained
As mentioned, the 5DF0 and 5DF1 codes store as a result of an internal malfunction within your BMW’s ABS unit. As pointed out by your diagnostic tool’s accompanying message for each code, you might have worked out that there’s an issue with the pump motor activation circuit:

  • 5DF0 – Hydraulic Unit Pump Motor
  • 5DF1 – Hydraulic Unit Pump Motor Connector Faulty

The ‘pump motor’ relates to the cylindrical assembly mounted to the very top of the ABS control unit, it’s usually painted black on the MK61. This part of the ABS unit is responsible for maintaining hydraulic pressure in the brake lines at relevant intervals in accordance with ABS or DSC operation – it’s therefore critical to unit functionality.

As this part of the unit is so important, it’s checked upon start-up by the ABS module. This just involves the module powering the motor and monitoring electrical behaviour to ensure it is consistent with a healthy and fully-functional pump motor.

Now as we mentioned, if you’re experiencing the aforementioned symptoms, it’s likely your ABS module is defective internally which is disrupting the pump motor activation circuit. This is swiftly detected by the ABS module, which is why your BMW E90 stores a 5DF0 code.

In most cases, your BMW’s 5DF0 code will be accompanied by 5DF1 too. This code is slightly misleading and can lead to misdiagnosis due to its accompanying message of ‘connector faulty’. While we’d always recommend checking connectors for any bent pins or corrosion and ruling out wiring or power supply issues, this code is actually caused by the aforementioned disruption to the pump activation circuit in most cases.

As the ABS module has commanded the motor to activate, but sees little or no current flow because of the malfunction, this looks identical to an unplugged connector or broken wire from an electrical point of view. This then causes 5DF1 to store in your BMW’s ABS module.

In both cases of 5DF0 and 5DF1, ABS functionality is disabled as a precaution, meaning the ABS warning light will inevitably illuminate. Where the vehicle has this functionality, DSC and traction control are also disabled, leading to their associated warning lights illuminating too.

How to resolve the 5DF0 & 5DF1 BMW fault
Having diagnosed their symptoms as a defective ABS control unit, many affected owners choose to replace the MK61 with new. While this may restore functionality temporarily, it leaves you vulnerable to the 5DF0 and 5DF1 fault returning to your BMW.

This is because many replacement MK61 units contain the very same internal defect as the one that caused your original issues. Not only this, but replacements are incredibly expensive and you’ll need to have them coded to your vehicle at additional time and expense.

Thankfully, we’ve got a much more cost-effective and longer-lasting solution.

Hi, I swapped out my old e92 335d dsc unit for a new used one because of the typical dc motor failure codes. The problem is, after swapping and coding i still have the same faults, but now the codes are constant. Before they would go away if i unplugged the DSC unit and plugged back in. Although they would appear as soon as the system was activated. However the pump would activate if i pressed TEST on my diagnostics tool, now its completely dead and the test fails
