What is the Bosch MG1CS003?
The Bosch MG1CS003 is an engine control module fitted to various post-2014 petrol-powered BMW models of varying engine sizes and performance levels. It’s common for models carrying 2.0-litre B48 or 3.0-litre B58 engines to contain one of these ECUs, although configurations do vary. As hybrid models like the 2015-2018 330e utilise petrol combustion engines, you’ll also find some hybrid models equipped with a Bosch MG1CS003.
As you might know, in Bosch’s ECU naming conventions the 'M' in MG1CS003 represents Motronic, which is essentially a control module that combines fuel injection and ignition control. The 'G' stands for gasoline, meaning these ECUs are designed for use in petrol and hybrid petrol engines rather than diesel engines. The '1' denotes the generation of MG hardware this ECU belongs to. Both the 'C' (common rail) and 'S' (solenoid) relate to the fuel injection system used by the engine the ECU is responsible for managing. Finally, the '003' is the ECU’s specific model variant within the MG1CS family.
Although this control module allowed for more sophisticated management of the engine and provided compatibility with the very latest engine features and functionalities, the Bosch MG1CS003 is not without its faults.
Bosch MG1CS003 failure explained
Failure of these control units is surprisingly common, and it often occurs due to the inclusion of components that degrade sooner than you’d expect them to. As is the nature of an engine control unit, repeated power-up cycles and regular exposure to heat and vibration place these components under significant stress. Over time, this can cause the MG1CS003’s components to break down, resulting in the failure of the unit as a whole.
When this issue occurs, the ECU’s ability to deliver the correct electrical signals to the fuel injectors is often hindered. Subsequently, the operation of one or more injectors can be affected, which can cause their corresponding engine cylinders to misfire. As a result, owners typically experience a reduction in available engine power and they may uncover stored DTCs related to cylinder misfires like 140001 or 140301. In some cases, the vehicle may also be forced into limp mode until the Bosch MG1CS003 has been adequately repaired.
Bosch MG1CS003 failure: repair or replace?
Having diagnosed their misfiring BMW as being caused by a defective MG1CS003 control unit, many owners decide to purchase a brand-new one. However, this is rarely the most effective solution as like-for-like units come loaded with the very same unreliable internal components that failed initially.
Not only this, but you’ll have to recode any replacement ECU to your specific vehicle at additional time and expense. This is on top of the thousands of pounds it’ll cost to purchase a brand-new unit.
Thankfully, we’ve developed a much more cost-effective and longer-lasting solution for Bosch MG1CS003 failure.
Our solution
We propose having your Bosch MG1CS003 professionally tested and remanufactured. We’ve developed our own hardware-in-the-loop testing rigs in-house to be able to analyse these control modules under realistic operating conditions. This allows us to pinpoint the root cause of failure, identify any other areas of potential weakness, and ensure the unit is fully functional again after we’ve rebuilt it.
Unlike many other repair services, during our MG1CS003 remanufacturing process we include higher-than-OEM-standard components and strengthen any underperforming areas of the control module. This firstly ensures the root cause of failure is properly resolved, but it also helps to enhance the durability of your ECU to provide lasting functionality.
We do all of this in just 2-3 working days and you won’t need to recode the ECU back to your vehicle afterwards. Get started today by filling out our quick-and-easy test form.
