What is the DQ250?
The DQ250 was the first DSG (direct-shift gearbox) released by VAG to the mass market in 2003. You might also find this gearbox referred to as a ‘DSG6’, referencing the transmission’s 6 gears. Five years later, VAG released the DQ200, a 7-speed transmission which was subsequently dubbed the ‘DSG7’.

Geared towards vastly improving vehicle efficiency, the DQ250 incorporated a wet-clutch design and was capable of handling up to 400 Nm of torque. This made the transmission a suitable choice for many higher-power VAG vehicles in the mid-2000s. This includes the Audi TT (2003-18), the Volkswagen Golf R and GTI (2004-2019), as well as various popular-at-the-time turbodiesel variants of the Octavia and Passat. Like all DSGs VAG have produced, the DQ250 relies on a mechatronic unit to control the dual-clutch system. The mechatronic unit combines electrical, hydraulic and mechanical control in order to drive the clutch packs and gear sets. Without a fully functional mechatronic unit, the once streamlined dual-clutch transmission system comes to an abrupt and problematic halt.

In most cases, it’ll be quite apparent that the DQ250’s mechatronic is in need of repair, as the performance of the transmission is often immediately affected.

A defective DQ250 mechatronic can also lead to harsh and erratic shifting, as though the transmission is staying in certain gears for too long, or skipping some altogether. Signs of a DQ250 mechatronic fault aren’t always performance-related, you’ll usually be given some indication of an issue via the dashboard too. Typically the transmission and engine warning lights will illuminate and the dashboard will display messages related to ‘gearbox malfunction’ or ‘reverse not available’.

When investigating these symptoms with a diagnostic tool, the presence of a P174E, P174A or P2711 DTC is a strong indicator that the DQ250 mechatronic is in need of repair.

Package the mechatronic unit inside a sturdy box with plenty of packaging material and make sure you include your confirmation email in the box.

Send us your package by tracked courier (the shipping instructions are on the confirmation email).

Once received we will test, rebuild and return your control unit with an unlimited mileage lifetime warranty. If your unit turns out not to be faulty then we will refund your payment less a small testing fee and return shipping.
