Whether you’ve got a U015100 code stored or not, an airbag warning light should never be ignored. If you’re in any doubt that your Mk7 Volkswagen Golf has suffered this common issue, you can send us your airbag control module for comprehensive testing by filling out our short test form.

VW Golf Mk7 airbag module fault
Despite being responsible for one of the most safety-critical systems in your vehicle, these airbag control modules frequently suffer internal failures. When this happens, the unit is rendered completely defective, inevitably triggering the airbag warning light.

Having suffered a malfunction, these airbag ECUs will be unable to communicate with other modules, causing a U015100 code to store:

  • U015100 – Lost Communication With Restraints Control Module

Like most other control modules, the airbag ECU relies heavily on CAN bus communication to understand what’s happening elsewhere on the vehicle to fulfil its responsibilities effectively. For example the Mk7 Golf’s airbag module sends and receives messages with various other units, like the VW’s ABS module and EPS module. It does this to communicate full functionality of the airbag system or whether a crash event has occurred. When this relationship unexpectedly breaks down because the airbag module isn’t communicating, a U015100 code is stored.

However, it’s not just the airbag system that relies on a fully-functional SRS (supplemental restraint system). If the airbag module stops communicating on the CAN bus, the VW’s ACC and front assist system can’t be sure that safety features are fully functional, therefore adaptive cruise control will also be disabled in the Mk7 Golf.

VW Golf Mk7 airbag module: repair or replace?
When met with the aforementioned issues, many Mk7 Golf owners will be recommended to replace their faulty airbag module with a brand new one from VW. However, you’ve got to remember that these units fail due to an internal malfunction, so replacement units will be susceptible to the very same issues.

Considering the extortionate cost and extended lead time associated with sourcing a new unit, we thought there must be a more-effective solution. This is why we’ve developed a full test and rebuild service for the Mk7 Golf’s airbag ECU, to not only resolve U015100 affordably, but for good.
