Is your DSG-equipped Skoda Kodiaq experiencing transmission issues with stored codes for P1735 or P1736? This sounds like a surprisingly common DQ381 mechatronic fault which is known to affect 2016-2023 models. Thankfully though, you’re in the right place and we can help.
Shop Now - Kodiaq DQ381 Rebuild
You might already know that the DQ381 DSG has experienced its fair share of issues since its release in 2016. However, most of these issues are actually isolated to the mechatronic control module, which acts as the brains of the system – find out more here.
The mechatronic fitted to your Skoda Kodiaq’s DQ381 box is comprised of low-quality components which frequently malfunction, inevitably leading to P1735 and P1736. In addition to these codes, you’ll no doubt experience performance issues like a loss of certain gears and limp mode.
Skoda Kodiaq P1735 and P1736 explained
As already mentioned, the presence of two diagnostic codes in particular signals a known malfunction of your Skoda Kodiaq’s DQ381 mechatronic unit:
These DTCs are a product of the mechatronic unit’s widespread internal failure, which is causing a discrepancy in its ability to determine clutch position.
Of course, the Kodiaq’s DQ381 dual-clutch transmission (DCT) utilises two clutches, meaning the mechatronic refers to two separate sensors to understand their position. For example, clutch 1 works in tandem with gears 1, 3, 5, and 7, while clutch 2 relates to gears 2, 4, and 6. This is why your Skoda Kodiaq might only store one of P1735 or P1736 – you might find both codes stored, depending on the extent of the mechatronic unit’s internal degradation.
As a rule, you’ll typically lose functionality of odd gears when P1735 strikes, while your Skoda Kodiaq will be without even gears with a stored P1736 code. As the mechatronic has lost all confidence in determining clutch position, it’ll likely activate gearbox protection mode or limp mode.
This is an issue frequently suffered by the VW Tiguan – find out more here.
Our Skoda Kodiaq P1735 & P1736 solution
If experiencing these symptoms, you might have been recommended to replace the entire gearbox. However, this is absolutely not necessary. As we said, this fault is isolated to the mechatronic control unit, and you won’t need to completely replace that either.
If you are considering replacing your Kodiaq’s DQ381 mechatronic, remember that new units consist of the very same internal components your original suffered from. This could land you in exactly the same position later down line, having forked out a significant sum for a replacement.
Thankfully, we’ve developed a more efficient solution. We’ve developed a bespoke remanufacturing solution for the DQ381 mechatronic unit.
