mini cooper frm3 footwell module repair

The Mini Cooper footwell module (FRM3) has become a constant cause of unwelcome repair costs for owners of various models manufactured between 2009-2016. When failure strikes, it’ll wreak havoc with body electronics – particularly hazard lights and power windows. Don’t worry, you don’t have to buy a new unit, our remanufacturing service can restore functionality in just 2-3 working days.

Mini Cooper FRM3 (Footwell Module) Repair

These frustrating control modules can be found across the Mini Cooper range and frequently malfunction due to internal issues. Understanding the functions the Mini Cooper’s FRM3 is responsible for is crucial when navigating the footwell module repair market.

What is the Mini Cooper footwell module?
Deriving from its German translation, FRM stands for footwell module. This is the small, rectangular unit found in the passenger-side footwell (on right-hand-drive cars) that’s responsible for controlling basic electronic functions. This is different to the junction box electronics (JBE), which is larger and can also be found in the passenger side footwell or behind the glovebox in some configurations – find out more here.

Signs your Mini Cooper’s footwell module needs to be repaired
Unfortunately, both of the aforementioned units are prone to failing and will cause a host of electrical issues. If your Mini Cooper is having issues with power windows or hazard lights, then this is a key indicator that your footwell module (FRM3) needs to be repaired.

Another sign your FRM3 needs to be repaired is a complete loss of headlight control. When the footwell module fails, it’ll simply prevent you from toggling between headlight modes. This means you might be left with a loss of full beam, a loss of dipped beam, or the headlights remain on constantly – inevitably causing the battery to drain as well. Of course, the same point applies to other exterior lights, like tail lights or side lights – when the FRM3 fails, you’ll be unable to switch them on or off.

A common misconception of FRM3 failure is that it’ll cause issues with central locking or windscreen wiper functionality. However, this is actually caused by a defective JBE and will not be rectified by having the Mini Cooper’s FRM3 repaired.

Mini Cooper footwell module: repair or replace?
Once affected owners have narrowed their electrical issues down to a defective FRM3 module, they’ll typically be recommended to replace it. However, replacement units come plagued with the very same internal issues that caused the original unit to malfunction. Not only that but a brand-new FRM3 will cost hundreds of pounds, and that’s before you’ve had to pay extra to recode it to your vehicle.

If you’re in need of an FRM3 repair for a Mini Cooper, we’d always recommend having your footwell module tested and comprehensively remanufactured by our expert technicians.
