Have you got P1856 or P240C stored in your Mercedes and find it just won’t change gear? The cause of this is a faulty gear selector, a common weakness in models built between 2000 and 2014 leading to issues with both gear selection and the PRNDS display.

What causes P1856 and P240C to store in my Mercedes?

As you’ll have found, P1856 and P240C materialise when the gear selector inside of your Mercedes develops an internal fault. This causes a mismatch in the gear position signal, which, when not aligned with a valid gear position, causes the transmission control module to flag this as a major problem:

  • P1856 - Selector Lever Position Detection Has Failed
  • P240C - CAN Signal Selector Lever Position N15/5 Implausible

The code P240C is logged in your Mercedes as an 'implausible signal' meaning that the data is missing, out of range or conflicting with other system inputs. P1856, however, indicates that your Mercedes is receiving no signal at all from the gear selector.

As both codes stem from the same internal defect, they often appear together. Once the module fails, clearing the codes will not resolve the problem, they will continue to return until the selector lever module is rebuilt.

How to resolve Mercedes P1856 and P240C

The only effective and long-term solution for your faulty gear selector is to have the module professionally rebuilt. Our dedicated team of expert technicians are specialists in this. This means that the internal defect within your Mercedes will not only be resolved, but prevented from reoccurring.
