Mercedes seven speed 7G Tronic Plus problems causing no gear selection

Mercedes 7G Tronic Plus fault

7G Tronic Plus is the 2nd generation seven speed Mercedes transmission ECU/TCU designed to help improve fuel economy and deliver smoother shifting. Unlike the previous version, this 7G Tronic Plus ECU/TCU is designed to work with start-stop engines.

However much like the previous seven speed conductor plate, the 7G Tronic Plus still comes with its fair share of problems.

Commonly when the 7G Tronic Plus conductor plate fails it will cause gears to stick before instigating a harsh gear adjustment causing rough and jerky gear change. Failure of the 7G Tronic Plus conductor plate will also completely prevent selection of any gear, leaving the vehicle undriveable.

When looking at diagnosing the vehicle for these issues be sure to scan and read fault codes from the transmission, if faulty the 7G Tronic Plus conductor plate will log fault codes for internal speed sensor issues. All of these faults usually begin intermittently but will always worsen into a more permanent state if left unresolved.

Rather than an expensive replacement from manufacturer, which will need SCN (Software Calibration Numbering) and CVN (Calibration Verification Number) coding at an extra expense, we offer test and rebuild of your original conductor plate within 2-3 working days. By rebuilding your original you will not need any form of coding or programming when you receive it back.

Common Failure symptoms:

  • Not selecting gear
  • Sticking in gear
  • ‘Transmission Malfunction’ message on dashboard

Common fault codes:

  • 0717 – The signal from component Y3/8n1 (Turbine speed sensor, VGS) is not available.
  • 0718 – The component Y38n1 (Turbine speed sensor, VGS) is defective.
  • 2201 – The component Y3/8n2 (Internal speed sensor) is defective.
  • 0722 - Output speed sensor Y3/8n3 output speed sensor VGS not available

Affected Vehicles:

Common failing part numbers:

  • A 000 901 81 00
  • A 000 270 28 00
  • A 000 270 33 00

Removal instructions:

  1. Drain gearbox oil
  2. Remove oil pan & internal oil filter
  3. Unscrew the 12 screws holding the valve body to the gearbox
  4. Unplug the control module multi-plug connector and then remove valve body from the gearbox - do not use a pry-bar/screwdriver to force the multi-plug connector from the gearbox housing when removing the valve body or it may break the connector.
  5. Remove the 12 screws that hold the control module to the valve body
