Mercedes gear selector module repair

If you are experiencing gear selector failure in a Mercedes C-Class, you’re not alone and you’ll need to have the module repaired or rebuilt. This is a recurring fault in several C-Class generations (notably W203, W204 and the later W205). This fault commonly prevents the selection of forward and reverse gears.

Mercedes C-Class Gear Selector Module Repair

Not to worry though, we are the industry leading experts at restoring full functionality in just 2-3 working days. This means your Mercedes gear selector will be in expert hands whilst being rebuilt.

Mercedes C-Class automatic gear selector faults

The Mercedes C-Class W203 and pre-facelift W204 have a common fault with the automatic gear selector module, that, if not repaired, will cause safety issues for drivers.

This issue is caused by an internal breakdown within the gear selector unit. While restarting the engine may temporarily restore gear selection, it doesn’t resolve the underlying fault. Unless the Mercedes gear selector module is properly repaired, the dashboard may show the wrong gear position on the display, giving the driver misleading information about whether the selector is in drive, reverse, or another mode.

No warning lights typically appear on the dashboard when the gear selector fails; however, fault codes will be stored in the vehicle’s system. Scanning with diagnostic tools will uncover fault codes, such as P1856, which indicates an issue with the selector lever position, or P240C, pointing to a CAN signal issue.

Mercedes automatic gear selector module: repair or replace?

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above and you’ve come to the conclusion that your C-Class gear selector is faulty, you might have been recommended to replace it with a brand-new unit.

However, this isn’t the most effective option, as replacement gear selectors contain the same components that have failed in your current unit. This means that, by purchasing a replacement part, you run the risk of the unit failing in the same manner, which will leave you with another faulty C-Class automatic gear selector.

This can be totally avoided using our bespoke test and rebuild service.

Our Mercedes C-Class automatic gear selector service

Rather than purchasing an expensive replacement from the manufacturer, which will only come with a short one-year warranty and will still have the inbuilt fault – we offer a far more cost-effective and long-term solution.

We rebuild every gear selector sent to us with top-grade components that exceed OEM standards, all at an affordable price. Each ECU is handled by our team of highly trained and dedicated technicians, so you can relax knowing your unit is in expert hands.

Common failure symptoms include:

  • Complete loss of gear selection
  • Failure to engage reverse when shifting from drive
  • Gear selector unresponsive/stuck
  • Selector position signal not recognised by the display, or displayed incorrectly

Common fault codes:

  • P1856 - Selector Lever Position Detection Failed

Test and rebuild:

We test ECUs on state-of-the-art testing rigs. This allows us to analyse your failure symptoms whilst simulating real-world driving conditions to confirm whether a defect is present. We’ll then confirm whether you wish to go ahead with the rebuild, and if you do, we’ll waive the testing fee.

Programming:

Once your control module has been comprehensively rebuilt, you won’t even need to recode it back to your vehicle either. All coding information previously stored in your module when you sent it to us is retained throughout our process.

Quality:

Long-lasting quality is always the priority of our work, which is why we only use top-grade components and cover you with a lifetime warranty. Thanks to a company-wide commitment to continuous improvement and the very latest state-of-the-art remanufacturing equipment, our defect rate is currently as low as 0.49%.
