SHOP NOW - ME9.7 ECU Repair

From 2004, the Bosch ME9.7 was widely fitted to Mercedes-Benz petrol vehicles equipped with M272 V6 and M273 V8 engines. The vehicles most commonly affected by this ECU failure include the third-generation Mercedes C-Class (2006-2012), Mercedes CL-Class (2006-2008), and the second-generation Mercedes CLK (2004-2007). When a failure occurs, the vehicle will typically develop misfires or an illuminated engine warning light before progressing to intermittent or complete non-starting issues. These symptoms will often lead owners to look for a Bosch ME9.7 ECU repair. If you own a Mercedes fitted with this ECU from the aforementioned era and you’re experiencing these symptoms, it's likely that the ECU is faulty. You can find a full list of affected vehicles in our catalogue. If you can’t find your model listed, you can still send the ECU to us for testing via this test form.

What is the Bosch ME9.7?
This ECU is a Motronic engine control unit built around a 32-bit PowerPC processor and designed to manage Mercedes-Benz’ naturally aspirated V6 and V8 petrol engines. It was used predominantly with the M272 V6 and M273 V8, as well as selected M156 AMG V8 applications, from the mid-2000s into the early 2010s. Over time, however, these units can become vulnerable to internal wear. Exposure to high temperatures and electrical stresses cause internal component degradation, eventually leading to ECU failure.

Common Bosch ME9.7 faults
The ECU is constantly managing ignition timing and fuel injection to keep the engine running correctly. When a fault develops, the engine ECU loses its ability to process these signals and control key engine functions, failing to control the injectors correctly and disrupting fuel delivery. On affected Mercedes models this leads to misfires, an illuminated engine management light, or complete non starting issues.

Misdiagnosis is common. External causes such as damaged wiring, faulty injectors or oxygen sensor issues can all cause symptoms that resemble ECU failure. We always recommend scanning your vehicle first to identify any related fault codes. However, if these have been ruled out, or a scan tool cannot establish communication with the ECU at all, this could indicate a fault originating within the ME9.7 ECU and the unit may require repair.

Bosch ME9.7 ECU: repair or replacement?
When dealing with a faulty ME9.7 ECU, many owners will opt to have the unit repaired. However, it is important to understand that a control module repair and a control module remanufacture are two different processes. A ME9.7 ECU repair aims to quickly restore functionality by replacing faulty components. A remanufacture aims to restore long-term durability by completely reworking the internals of the ECU and upgrading all underperforming components with higher-than-OEM-standard ones. This is the process we carry out as part of our ECU remanufacturing service.

An alternative option for owners is to resolve their ECU fault by replacing the unit with a brand-new one. However, a replacement ECU isn’t the best solution, and it’ll likely cost more time and money in the long run. Remember that replacement ECUs consist of the very same components as your original unit. Therefore, this option leaves you vulnerable to repeat malfunction later down the line.

Our solution
Rather than a standard repair or an expensive replacement, we offer a specialist ME9.7 ECU remanufacturing service to restore full functionality in 2-3 working days.
