BMW E90/E92 Electric Power Steering Rack Motor malfunction

E90 E92 power steering fault

This BMW 3 Series, 1 Series and Z4 electric power steering rack motor is a very common fault for the 2006 – 2016 build range.

Complete and sudden loss of power assisted steering, caused by failure of this unit, will cause the steering to become incredibly heavy at low speeds making manoeuvrability very difficult especially when trying to park.

A clear sign that the steering rack motor has failed is a lack of communication to diagnostic equipment. This fundamental failure can often lead to long diagnosis and labour times due to the nature of this inherent common failure with the BMW E90 and E92 steering rack.

Most BMW main agents will seek to resolve this common problem by replacing the entire steering rack, which can prove to be very slow and needlessly expensive due to the cost of the new steering rack, labour costs involved with removing, re-fitting and programming.  A new unit will come with a very short (1 year) warranty and will suffer from the common issues as the root cause has not yet been revised at the factory, meaning that it will likely fail at some point further down the line.

Thankfully there is a more cost effective and reliable solution, we are now able to fully rebuild your own steering motor with an unlimited mileage lifetime warranty, this is a fully re-engineered solution with all common failing components upgraded to higher rated than standard versions. All programming is retained during the rebuild, so no need for coding – simply refit and away you go.

Removal instructions:

For this BMW E90 and E92 steering rack we only require the electric power steering motor from the full rack which cuts down on cost straight away - do not send in the entire rack. Our rebuild option re-engineers the main manufacturing defects, meaning that the chance of further problems arising would be slim to none, but should any issues occur our lifetime warranty will ensure swift resolution of any problems. However, our work defect rate is lower than 0.6% on all of our rebuilds, so you can be assured of our very high standard of work.

I have intermittent loss of power steering with steering assistance fault/failure message in idrive. In addition to error code A54B, D516 and D507 is also stored in the memory. Is it most likely to be the motor or could it be something else?
ECU Admin says: 16/06/2022 09:29:57
Hi, this would suggest a faulty EPS unit/motor

Hi Gregor, that is often caused by internal failure of the power steering module, but can be repaired for.

Hi there, I have the same problem on my BMW 320 D E90 with a yellow indication on the dash making the steering very hard in slow speed. At first point I changed the battery but nothing changed. Then I took the car to a BMW garage where they did programming. The problem solved only for 1 month and now the problem appears again. Whats your opinion. How can I solve it once off? Thanks.
