Electrical faults can create strange symptoms. The Nissan Sunny came in to us because whenever the radio was turned on the car’s rear lights stopped working, and if the lights were turned on then the radio stopped working. The cause was traced to the radio wiring – whoever wired it up wired the live feed to it ok, but the problem was with the earth wiring. There are a lot of wires around the radio area, some of them being earth wires, and a common way to find an earth wire (But not the correct way) is to use an ohmmeter between earth and the suspected earth wire with the meter set to buzz if continuity is found between them. The supposed earth wire tapped into for the radio was in fact the live feed to the rear lights. Checking this wire with a buzzing ohmmeter indicated it to be an earth wire, because it was connected through to earth through a small resistance ignored by the test equipment – that resistance being due to the side light bulbs. The radio could have been damaged by this type of treatment, but fortunately it survived.

Lacking loss of power. This is a very common problem but can be almost impossible to diagnose if you are not aware of this problem, caused by valve carbonization this stops the fuel being injected from atomizing of the back of the inlet valve. The only real way to cure this fault is to remove the head and clean or replace the valves but this can be very time consuming and expensive, the cheaper and more efective answer is get the ECU (engine control unit) remapped and uprated, we can do this click on ECU for more info.
