Citroen Xantia 1992 -
ABS light on all the time

Citroen Xantia ABS ECU / module . Failure of this unit will be signified by the ABS light staying on, it is a very common failure with the Citroen Xantia.

Fully guaranteed ABS modules available from £195.00

Citoen saxo VTI 1.6 16v 1997-1999

Will not rev up properly & vehicle speed severely affected. This model is known for its catalyst problems, the lamna sensor is usually the first part to go when this happens the cat gets soaked with fuel and causes it to become brittle until it eventually breaks up and blocks the exhaust solid - restricting the flow of gas and causes a severe loss of power and top speed, usually restricts the car to a max speed of 30 - 50 mph. in this case the cat and lamna sensor should be replaced together to avoid damaging the new catalyst.

Topper/motoring news article, Citroen

by David Peacock, Peacock & Purvey.

Citroen engines that are still poor at starting from cold but OK at hot starting despite being free of any ignition or starter motor related faults could have compression problems, or problems with the petrol supply. Engines require  a minimum compression value to give satisfactory cold starting and   this value  increases as the temperature drops. Hence an engine with  borderline compressions can start OK all during the summer but can refuse to start as soon as winter  arrives. Over 150 PSI is OK for all engines though some types of engine design are OK with as little as 110 PSI.  Fuel Injection engines increase the petrol supply to the injectors for a cold engine

For whatever system if it is suspected that not enough petrol is the cause of the problem then add about a desert spoonfull of petrol down the inlet tract and if starting is then successfull then your suspiscion is confirmed - conversly if flooding is suspected then disconnect the petrol pump outlet after flooding is suspected to have occurred and starting will again confirm  your suspiscion.

Emission Failures -

High CO & low lamna reading.   common causes of rich running faults are the lamna sensor or the ECU (engine control unit) both of these parts are relatively simple to check, to check the sensor strip back the insulation on the signal wire from the lamna sensor, this wire is usually black.  Then hold the bare wire between your finger and thumb then touch your other hand on to the battery positive the internal resistance of your body will give 1volt at your finger tips which is what the sensor would give out when the engine runs rich, if the emissions come down then you have a faulty lamna sensor or wiring but if the emissions remain the same then the ECU is a possible fault. For more information on ECU testing click on ECU

High CO with normal lamna reading. If the oxygen level is below 1% then a high CO with a normal lamna reading can only be one thing - the catalytic converter, when ever you get this reading the catalyst should be condemed. But always make sure you check the oxygen level first, if its high (over 1% at speed) then you’ve got a leaking exhaust or engine runing problems.

Hessitation, power loss, missfire. This type of problem can be one of the most time consuming faults to find because the problem often is only slight and the fault only shows up when the car is being driven under load. One common cause of this is a fouled or sticking injector.
